The comparison in full
The short version
Moodle is an open-source learning platform. It is free to download, it runs anywhere, and a large community builds plugins for it. The price of that freedom is work: someone has to host it, update it and choose the plugins.
Origin is a hosted platform for adult and vocational education and for training providers. We run it; you put your name on it. Its focus is what happens after a course: Munin keeps checking what learners remember.
Remembering after the course
Most platforms stop at the completion mark. Origin’s Munin schedules a two-minute review after each module, timed to when knowledge starts to fade, and keeps going until each skill graduates. It is part of the platform, not a plugin.
Moodle has no spaced repetition in its core. The community plugins we found either support Moodle only up to version 4.2 or are an early alpha. If reviews after the course matter to you, that is the biggest difference between the two.
Building courses
In Origin you upload the PDF or Word file you already teach from, up to 300 pages, and Origin AI drafts the modules, lessons and quizzes. Nothing reaches a learner until a teacher approves it.
Moodle’s AI features, added in version 4.5, help inside the text editor and summarise course content. An admin chooses the AI provider, which suits organisations with their own AI policy. We did not find course or quiz generation in Moodle’s own documentation.
Hosting, price and who does the work
Moodle costs nothing to download. MoodleCloud, Moodle’s own hosting, starts at €150 a year for 50 users. Larger installations are usually run by a Moodle partner, and the partner sets the price.
Origin is priced per organisation, with a quote after a 15-minute demo. We run the hosting and the updates, and the database is hosted in the EU, in Paris.
Your brand and your programmes
Origin puts your name, logo, colours and web address on the portal, and each programme can have its own portal, all run from one admin workspace.
Moodle can be themed to look like your organisation. A custom web address comes with MoodleCloud Standard, as an add-on on Medium, or with your own hosting.
When Moodle is the better choice
- You want to host the platform yourself, or with a partner of your choice.
- You have developers or a partner who will maintain it and pick plugins.
- You need a very low entry price for a small group: MoodleCloud starts at €150 a year.
- You rely on certified LTI Advantage or Open Badges.
- Your AI policy requires choosing the AI provider yourself.
When Origin is the better choice
- You want a platform that is run for you, with no hosting or updates to manage.
- You want learners to keep what they learned, with reviews after each module built in.
- You teach from PDFs and Word files and want them turned into courses you approve.
- You run several programmes or clients and want a portal under each one’s own name.
- You want to work in Swedish, with a team in Stockholm.
Moving from Moodle to Origin
SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and xAPI packages you use today run in Origin. The material you teach from, in PDF or Word, becomes new courses with Origin AI. In the demo, bring a list of what you have and we will go through what moves and what does not.
