The comparison in full
The short version
TalentLMS is a cloud learning platform for growing businesses. You can sign up and start free, the price list is public, and a library of ready-made courses can be added on. It is run by Epignosis and hosted in the USA.
Origin is a hosted platform for teams where forgetting costs: hotels and restaurants, flight schools and airlines, healthcare and driving schools. You build courses from the manuals you already train from, under your own name, and Munin keeps checking what your staff remember. The database is hosted in the EU, in Paris.
Remembering after the course
Origin’s Munin schedules a two-minute review after each module, timed to when knowledge starts to fade, and keeps going until each skill graduates. It is part of the platform, and it runs for every course.
We did not find spaced repetition in TalentLMS itself. The same company sells TalentCards, a separate mobile app with spaced repetition. It can sync users with TalentLMS, which needs a paid TalentLMS plan (Core or higher) and a paid TalentCards plan (Standard or higher). If reviews after the course matter to you, compare that setup with one platform that does both.
Building courses
Both platforms can start from a document. TalentCraft, the AI in TalentLMS, turns an uploaded PDF, Word or PowerPoint file of up to 10 MB into a course unit, and can also write pages, flashcards and questions from a prompt. It runs on AI credits: a one-time amount on Core, a monthly amount on higher plans. A new unit starts as a draft and goes live when someone publishes it.
Origin AI drafts the modules, lessons and quizzes from a PDF or Word file of up to 300 pages, a much larger document. Every AI block is marked for review, and nothing reaches your staff until a trainer approves it.
Price, hosting and your data
TalentLMS publishes its prices in USD: a free plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses with no time limit, then Core from $119, Grow from $229 and Pro from $449 a month when billed yearly ($149, $299 and $579 billed monthly), with Enterprise on request. Standard plans count active users; a login-based option exists on Pro and Enterprise.
TalentLMS states that it complies with the GDPR, is verified under the EU Cloud Code of Conduct and holds ISO/IEC 27001. It is hosted on Amazon Web Services, and its list of sub-processors gives the location as N. Virginia, USA. Origin’s database is hosted in the EU, in Paris, and we sign a data processing agreement with every customer. Origin is priced per organisation, with a quote after a 15-minute demo.
Your brand and your sites
Both put your brand on the portal. In TalentLMS a custom domain comes with the Core plan, removing TalentLMS branding needs Pro or Enterprise, and branches give each department or client its own address, theme and logo: one branch on Core, three on Grow, fifteen on Pro and unlimited on Enterprise.
Origin puts your name, logo, colours and web address on the portal, and each site or brand can have its own portal, all run from one workspace.
Standards and the courses you already have
TalentLMS supports SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5, and LTI 1.3 for outside tools from the Grow plan. Its help centre says SCORM 2004 is not supported. Origin runs SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and xAPI packages as they are; it does not list cmi5.
When TalentLMS is the better choice
- You want to start free, with a plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses.
- You want to buy from a public price list, without a call.
- You want ready-made courses now: the TalentLibrary add-on has them.
- Your staff learn where there is no signal: the TalentLMS app works offline.
- You use cmi5 or LTI 1.3 tools.
When Origin is the better choice
- You want your staff to keep what they learned, with reviews after each module built in.
- You want your data hosted in the EU.
- You train from your own manuals and want them turned into courses a trainer approves.
- You use SCORM 2004 packages.
- You want to work in Swedish, with a team in Stockholm.
Moving from TalentLMS to Origin
SCORM 1.2 and xAPI packages you use in TalentLMS run in Origin; cmi5 packages do not. The manuals and documents behind your courses, in PDF or Word, become new courses with Origin AI. In the demo, bring a list of what you have and we will go through what moves and what does not.
