The short version

Typsy is a hospitality training library with a learning platform around it: more than 2,000 short video lessons on service, drinks, food, hotels and management, filmed with hospitality experts. You subscribe per member, and your team watches.

Origin starts from the other end. You upload the standards, recipes, routines and manuals your house already has, Origin AI drafts the courses, and a trainer approves them. Your staff learn your way of doing things, under your name, and Munin keeps checking what they remember.

Ready-made lessons, or your own standards

If you have no training material and want good general lessons today, Typsy’s library is the quicker start: lessons are 2–5 minutes, cover the main hospitality topics, and come with certificates endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality.

If your house has its own way of serving, its own allergen routines and its own opening and closing checklists, Origin builds courses from those documents, up to 300 pages at a time. Typsy’s Team and Enterprise plans also take your own videos and PDFs, and SmartCards, in beta, turn an English document of up to 20 pages into short cards a manager reviews.

Remembering after the course

Origin’s Munin schedules a two-minute review after each module, timed to when knowledge starts to fade, and keeps going until each skill graduates. For a busy floor, that means short reviews between shifts instead of retraining from scratch.

We did not find spaced repetition in Typsy. What it does have is expiry: most badges run out after three years, reminders go out before certificates expire, and refresher training is reassigned when it is due.

Price

Typsy publishes its prices in USD: $120 per member a year on the Team plan, for up to 100 members, and $180 a year for an individual. Enterprise, for 100 members or more, is on request; single sign-on and API access cost extra there.

Origin is priced per organisation, with a quote after a 15-minute demo: your number of people, the modules you need and your own brand.

Your brand and your data

Typsy’s Team and Enterprise plans include a “branded workforce experience”. We did not find a custom web address or a way to remove Typsy’s branding on its pages. Origin puts your name, logo, colours and web address on the portal, with one portal per hotel, restaurant or brand if you like.

Typsy’s security page lists GDPR, data residency, single sign-on, multi-factor sign-in, penetration testing and SOC 2; we did not find where its data is hosted. Origin’s database is hosted in the EU, in Paris, and we sign a data processing agreement with every customer.

When Typsy is the better choice

  • You have little training material of your own and want 2,000+ ready-made lessons from day one.
  • Your team speaks many languages: lessons have subtitles in 40+ languages and dubbed audio in 10+.
  • You want certificates endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality.
  • One person wants to learn on their own: there is an individual plan.
  • You want training assigned automatically, with reminders before certificates expire.
  • You want Typsy’s lessons inside a system you already run, such as Cornerstone or Workday.

When Origin is the better choice

  • Your house has its own standards and manuals, and you want staff to learn those.
  • You want your staff to keep what they learned, with reviews after each module built in.
  • You want your own name and web address on the portal, per hotel or restaurant.
  • You already have SCORM or xAPI courses you want to run.
  • You want your data hosted in the EU, and to work in Swedish with a team in Stockholm.

Using both

Typsy says its lessons can be delivered into another learning platform with SCORM or LTI. If you want Typsy’s general lessons next to courses built from your own standards, ask Typsy whether that covers Origin; SCORM packages run in Origin as they are.
